The F*ck Makes A Good Radio Host Anyway?

We all listen to radio to hear our favorite and newest songs but in between the songs and commercials what are we left with? The radio personalities! Star, Charlamagne Tha God, Sway Calloway, Angie Martinez, Funk Master Flex, Old Man Ebro and the list really goes on and on. What's so special about them though? What is it about them that makes us not want to switch the station though? What makes a good radio host exactly?

Well for starters all radio hosts have charisma. There has to be something to you that makes us wanna watch you. I hate to say it but it really is one of those things where either you have it or you don't. There are cases where it takes one to open up and tap into their potential but that's them tapping into something that was already there, it just needed to be awakened. Charisma can't be taught unfortunately so if you're a host and you're struggling then maybe you need to be honest with yourself and see if this is right for you.

Tough skin is important to have in any field of entertainment but especially in radio. There's always going to be things said about you on social media or even on your own show when they call in. No matter where the negativity comes from you have to remain unmoved by it. Showing that it got under your skin is never helpful for your brand so no responding back to whatever is said about you and no subbing. Just let it go and do you.

Being able to think and act on the fly is very essential especially when you have a live show. Anything can happen on air so you have to be ready for any and everything which includes (but not limited to) last minute cancellation of guests, technical difficulties, situations with fans not being able to call in or not be heard clearly, or even arguments with your co-hosts or guest. Whatever the case may be you have to be able to roll with the punches because if you're stressing then you run the risk of losing your audience.

If you possess these three traits then you'll be standing on a great foundation.
